SJR20,1,2 1Relating to: proclaiming the Milwaukee Lake Schooner Project an official
2sesquicentennial project.
SJR20,1,33 Whereas, Wisconsin will celebrate 150 years of statehood in 1998; and
SJR20,1,64 Whereas, Milwaukee Lake Schooner Ltd. has proposed building a tall ship
5reminiscent of those found sailing the Great Lakes 150 years ago to coincide with
6Wisconsin's sesquicentennial; and
SJR20,1,97 Whereas, Wisconsin has long been known as a great shipbuilding state and
8years ago these majestic vessels were built by hundreds of settlers along Wisconsin's
9shores; and
SJR20,1,1210 Whereas, the magnificent tall ships, and the bold men and women who sailed
11them on Lake Michigan more than a century ago, were responsible in large measure
12for the creation of our region; and
SJR20,1,1413 Whereas, tall ships spurred the trade and commerce which developed this
14native territory into the great state of Wisconsin; and
SJR20,1,1715 Whereas, more than 100 years ago traders bartered with Wisconsin's Native
16Americans, and the Menominee Nation has thereby donated 6 230-foot-tall, sacred,
17old-growth white pines for the masts of the ship; and

1Whereas, this tall ship will be used as a teaching vessel to educate Wisconsin's
2children and citizens about the Great Lakes ecosystem and Wisconsin's rich cultural
3heritage; now, therefore, be it
SJR20,2,6 4Resolved by the senate, the Assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
5legislature designates the Milwaukee Lake Schooner Project as an official
6sesquicentennial project.
