Whereas, Richard Bong was one of the most illustrious residents of northern
4Wisconsin, having been born in Superior and educated in Poplar and Superior; and

Whereas, Richard Bong was a leading American hero during World War II; and

Whereas, he demonstrated his military skill and courage by shooting down 40
7enemy planes in combat in the Pacific theater of operations; and

Whereas, he demonstrated even greater valor and dedication by volunteering
9for combat while assigned to duty as an instructor, during that time destroying 12
10of his total of 40 enemy planes; and

Whereas, for his intrepid exploits Major Bong received 26 decorations,
12including the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the
13Silver Star with clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with clusters, the Air
14Medal with clusters and the Australian Flying Cross; and

Whereas, he died tragically during 1945 in a crash of a new aircraft he was

3Resolved by the senate, the Assembly concurring, That the members of the
4Wisconsin legislature request the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp
5commemorating Richard Bong; and, be it further
