SJR24,1,43 Whereas, Richard Bong was one of the most illustrious residents of northern
4Wisconsin, having been born in Superior and educated in Poplar and Superior; and
SJR24,1,55 Whereas, Richard Bong was a leading American hero during World War II; and
SJR24,1,76 Whereas, he demonstrated his military skill and courage by shooting down 40
7enemy planes in combat in the Pacific theater of operations; and
SJR24,1,108 Whereas, he demonstrated even greater valor and dedication by volunteering
9for combat while assigned to duty as an instructor, during that time destroying 12
10of his total of 40 enemy planes; and
SJR24,1,1411 Whereas, for his intrepid exploits Major Bong received 26 decorations,
12including the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the
13Silver Star with clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with clusters, the Air
14Medal with clusters and the Australian Flying Cross; and
SJR24,1,1615 Whereas, he died tragically during 1945 in a crash of a new aircraft he was
16testing; and

1Whereas, Richard Bong's service to his country deserves to be remembered and
2permanently memorialized; now, therefore, be it
SJR24,2,5 3Resolved by the senate, the Assembly concurring, That the members of the
4Wisconsin legislature request the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp
5commemorating Richard Bong; and, be it further
SJR24,2,7 6Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
7resolution to the Postmaster General.
