SJR44,1,1 1Relating to: the life and public service of Earl D. Morton.
SJR44,1,32 Whereas, Earl D. Morton was born on November 28, 1918, in Kenosha and died
3on October 23, 1995, in Rochester, Minnesota; and
SJR44,1,54 Whereas, he graduated from Kenosha High School and Carroll College and
5received a law degree from Marquette University; and
SJR44,1,96 Whereas, he served for 5 years in the U.S. army during World War II; rising in
7rank from private to captain and receiving the Purple Heart, the Presidential
8Citation, a battle star, the American Defense Service Ribbon, the American Theater
9Ribbon and the Victory Ribbon; and
SJR44,1,1110 Whereas, after World War II Mr. Morton practiced law in Kenosha and served
11on the Kenosha Common Council from 1954 to 1956; and
SJR44,1,1212 Whereas, he was elected to the assembly in 1956 and 1958; and
SJR44,1,1613 Whereas, during his first session in the assembly he was a member of the
14Veterans and Military Affairs Committee and during his 2nd session his grasp of
15issues and his abilities were recognized by appointment to the Joint Committee on
16Finance; and

1Whereas, he was elected to the senate in 1960, served on the Governmental and
2Veterans Affairs Committee and the Judiciary Committee and was the chairperson
3of the Legislative Council's Youthful Drinking and Driving Committee; and
SJR44,2,64 Whereas, Mr. Morton was appointed a Kenosha County judge during March
51965, was later elected circuit court judge and reelected twice and retired from the
6judiciary during 1984; and
SJR44,2,87 Whereas, he was well respected and was known for his diplomatic demeanor,
8his articulateness and his affability; now, therefore, be it
SJR44,2,12 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature salute the many decades of devoted and effective public service
11that Earl D. Morton gave to the people of this state, express their sorrow at his death
12and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
SJR44,2,15 13Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
14resolution to Mr. Morton's wife, Dolores; his sons, Jeffrey Morton and Dean Morton;
15and his daughter, Debbie VanDerwerff.
