SJR50,1,1 1Relating to: the life and public service of Robert Zimmerman.
SJR50,1,32 Whereas, Robert Zimmerman was born on January 5, 1910, in Milwaukee and
3died on January 17, 1996, in Madison; and
SJR50,1,54 Whereas, he graduated from Madison Central High School and served in the
5U.S. army for 2 1/2 years during World War II; and
SJR50,1,76 Whereas, he began his public service as Assistant Secretary of State in 1939
7and held that position for 15 years; and
SJR50,1,98 Whereas, he was elected Secretary of State in 1956 and held that office until his
9retirement in 1975; and
SJR50,1,1210 Whereas, although he relied on personal contacts and his reputation for public
11service rather than expensive campaigns, he often received more votes than any
12other candidate for a statewide office; and
SJR50,1,1513 Whereas, his vigor, gregariousness, concern and affection for people and his
14devotion to public service made him a positive role model for generations of
15politicians; and
SJR50,1,1716 Whereas, he ran his office frugally and with a personal touch, insisting on
17serving his constituents; and

1Whereas, even after his retirement he could be seen walking jauntily in
2Madison, offering a hearty greeting and a kind word to everyone he met; now,
3therefore, be it
SJR50,2,9 4Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
5Wisconsin legislature salute Robert Zimmerman for the many decades of devoted
6public service that he rendered to the people of this state, assert their admiration for
7the personal qualities that endeared him to thousands of persons, express their
8sorrow at his death and extend their sincere condolences to his many friends and
9admirers.
