SJR9,1,1 1Relating to the life and public service of Henry Maier.
SJR9,1,32 Whereas, Henry Maier was born on February 7, 1918, in Dayton, Ohio, and died
3on July 17, 1994, in Delafield; and
SJR9,1,54 Whereas, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and served
5in the U.S. Navy during World War II; and
SJR9,1,76 Whereas, he was elected to the senate in 1950 and reelected in 1954 and 1958;
7and
SJR9,1,98 Whereas, he served on the governmental and veterans affairs committee and
9the committee on education and was the democratic floor leader for 4 sessions; and
SJR9,1,1110 Whereas, he was elected Mayor of Milwaukee in 1960 and left office in 1988, his
1128-year service in that office being the longest in that city's history; and
SJR9,1,1512 Whereas, his tenure was marked by many accomplishments; such as the
13creation of the department of city development, extensive construction of public
14housing for the elderly, the acquisition of substantial state and federal revenue, and
15the founding of Summerfest; now, therefore, be it
SJR9,2,3 16Resolved by the senate, the Assembly concurring, That the members of the
17legislature of the state of Wisconsin commend the decades of devoted public service

1that Henry Maier performed for this state and the City of Milwaukee, express their
2sorrow at his death and express their condolences to his family and friends; and, be
3it further
SJR9,2,6 4Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
5resolution to Henry Maier's wife, Dr. Karen Lamb, and to his daughters, Melinda and
6Melanie.
