AB28,1,3 1An Act to amend 36.27 (1) (a); and to create 36.27 (1) (b) of the statutes;
2relating to: nonresident tuition for undergraduates at the University of
3Wisconsin-Madison.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill directs the board of regents of the University of Wisconsin (UW)
System to set the nonresident tuition for undergraduates at the UW-Madison at an
amount equal to 175% of their instructional costs. In the 1996-97 academic year,
nonresident tuition for undergraduates at the UW-Madison is an amount equal to
approximately 124.4% of instructional costs.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB28, s. 1 4Section 1. 36.27 (1) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB28,2,45 36.27 (1) (a) Subject to par. pars. (b) and (c), the board may establish for
6different classes of students differing tuition and fees incidental to enrollment in
7educational programs or use of facilities in the system. Except as otherwise provided

1in this section, the board may charge any student who is not exempted by this section
2a nonresident tuition. The board may establish special rates of tuition and fees for
3the extension and summer sessions and such other studies or courses of instruction
4as the board deems advisable.
AB28, s. 2 5Section 2. 36.27 (1) (b) of the statutes is created to read:
AB28,2,86 36.27 (1) (b) The board shall establish nonresident tuition for undergraduates
7at the University of Wisconsin-Madison at an amount equal to 175% of their
8instructional costs.
AB28, s. 3 9Section 3. Effective date.
AB28,2,1010 (1) This act takes effect on July 1, 1998.
