AB33,1,3 An Act to amend 36.27 (1) (a); and to create 36.27 (1) (b) of the statutes; relating to: tuition for undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin System and granting rule-making authority.

This bill directs the board of regents of the University of Wisconsin System, beginning in the 1998-99 academic year, to establish academic fees for resident undergraduates at a level not to exceed 33% of instructional costs and tuition for nonresident undergraduates at a level not to exceed 120% of instructional costs.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB33, s. 1 Section 1. 36.27 (1) (a) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB33,2,3 36.27 (1) (a) Subject to par. pars. (b) and (c), the board may establish for different classes of students differing tuition and fees incidental to enrollment in educational programs or use of facilities in the system. Except as otherwise provided in this section, the board may charge any student who is not exempted by this section a nonresident tuition. The board may establish special rates of tuition and fees for the extension and summer sessions and such other studies or courses of instruction as the board deems advisable.

AB33, s. 2 Section 2. 36.27 (1) (b) of the statutes is created to read:

AB33,2,9 36.27 (1) (b) Beginning in the 1998-99 academic year, the board shall establish academic fees for resident undergraduates at a level not to exceed 33% of instructional costs and shall establish tuition for nonresident undergraduates at a level not to exceed 120% of instructional costs. The board shall promulgate rules defining "instructional costs" for the purpose of this paragraph.
