AB346,1,4 1An Act to renumber 38.24 (5) (a) 1.; to amend 36.27 (3m) (b) and 38.24 (5) (b);

3statutes; relating to: exempting certain resident students from tuition at the
4University of Wisconsin System and at the technical college system.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Current law provides free tuition at the University of Wisconsin (UW) System
to any resident undergraduate student who is enrolled in a bachelor's degree
program and who is the child of a correctional officer, fire fighter or law enforcement
officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state. Similarly, current law provides
free tuition at the technical college system to any resident student who is enrolled
in a program leading to an associate of arts degree, a collegiate transfer program or
a vocational diploma program and who is the child of a fire fighter or law enforcement
officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state.
This bill provides that the child of a slain correctional officer is entitled to free
tuition at the technical college system under the same conditions as described above.
The bill also provides that the child of a slain educator is entitled to free tuition at
the UW System and at the technical college system under the same conditions as
described above. Under the bill, "educator" means any person employed by a school
district who holds a license or permit issued by the state superintendent of public
instruction and whose employment requires that he or she hold that license or
permit.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB346, s. 1 1Section 1. 36.27 (3m) (a) 1g. of the statutes is created to read:
AB346,2,42 36.27 (3m) (a) 1g. "Educator" means any person employed by a school district
3who holds a license or permit issued by the state superintendent of public instruction
4and whose employment requires that he or she hold that license or permit.
AB346, s. 2 5Section 2. 36.27 (3m) (b) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB346,2,116 36.27 (3m) (b) The board shall grant full remission of fees to any resident
7undergraduate student who is enrolled in a bachelor's degree program and who is the
8child of a correctional officer, educator, fire fighter or law enforcement officer who
9was killed in the line of duty in this state. The student must be the child of a
10correctional officer, educator, fire fighter or law enforcement officer who was so killed
11when the child was under the age of 21 or before the child was born.
AB346, s. 3 12Section 3. 38.24 (5) (a) 1. of the statutes is renumbered 38.24 (5) (a) 1s.
AB346, s. 4 13Section 4. 38.24 (5) (a) 1e. of the statutes is created to read:
