AB714,1,3 1An Act to amend 165.72 (title) and 165.72 (2) (intro.); and to create 165.72 (2)
2(c) and 165.72 (2m) of the statutes; relating to: a hotline in the department of
3justice for the reporting of information regarding firearms in public schools.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, the department of justice (DOJ) is required to maintain a
toll-free telephone number for persons to provide information regarding suspected
violations of laws concerning controlled substances (dangerous drugs). This bill
requires DOJ to maintain a single toll-free telephone number both for information
regarding suspected controlled substances law violations and for persons to
anonymously provide information regarding firearms in public schools. The bill also
provides that on receiving any information regarding firearms in a public school,
DOJ is required to provide the information to the administration of the public school
and the appropriate law enforcement agency for the municipality in which the public
school is located.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

AB714, s. 2 3Section 2. 165.72 (2) (intro.) of the statutes is amended to read:
AB714,2,64 165.72 (2) Hotline. (intro.) The department of justice shall maintain a single
5toll-free telephone number during normal retail business hours, as determined by
6departmental rule, for both all of the following:
AB714, s. 3 7Section 3. 165.72 (2) (c) of the statutes is created to read:
AB714,2,98 165.72 (2) (c) For persons to anonymously provide information regarding
9firearms in public schools.
AB714, s. 4 10Section 4. 165.72 (2m) of the statutes is created to read:
AB714,2,1411 165.72 (2m) Transmission of information concerning firearms in public
12schools.
On receiving any information under sub. (2) (c) regarding firearms in a
13public school, the department of justice shall provide the information to all of the
14following:
AB714,2,1515 (a) The administration of the public school.
AB714,2,1716 (b) The appropriate law enforcement agency, as defined in s. 165.83 (1) (b), for
17the municipality in which the public school is located.
