AJR112,1,42 Whereas, Norway, which means "Northern Way", is the 5th largest country in
3Europe, covering 125,052 square miles, and has a population of approximately
44,000,000; and
AJR112,1,65 Whereas, Norwegian immigrants have made countless contributions to the
6cultures of Wisconsin and other regions of the United States; and
AJR112,1,97 Whereas, "Syttende Mai", Norwegian for "May 17", celebrates the anniversary
8of the 1814 signing of the Norwegian Constitution that declared Norway's
9independence from Denmark; and
AJR112,1,1410 Whereas, Wisconsin communities, such as Stoughton, Blair, Westby and
11Woodville, will celebrate "Syttende Mai" in many ways, including parades,
12Norwegian displays, Norwegian street music and dancers, "Syttende Mai" King and
13Queen presentations, "Syttende Mai" runs, special museum tours, choral concerts,
14church services and Norwegian drama; and

1Whereas, thousands of Wisconsin citizens of Norwegian heritage will
2participate in these activities during the month of May; now, therefore, be it
AJR112,2,7 3Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the weekend of
4May 15, 16 and 17, 1998, is proclaimed "Syttende Mai Weekend" in the state of
5Wisconsin, and that all of the citizens of this state are declared honorary Norwegians
6for that weekend and are urged to observe the "Syttende Mai Weekend" with
7appropriate celebrations.
