2Heritage Week.
AJR28,1,43 Whereas, African-Americans have both maintained a rich distinctive culture
4and have made major contributions to American culture in general; and
AJR28,1,85 Whereas, through the contributions of such African-Americans as the
6Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., El-Hajj Malik El-Shabbazz, Shirley
7Chisholm and Reverend Jesse Jackson, America's views of itself and of the world
8have grown to incorporate new ideas and directions; and
AJR28,1,129 Whereas, through the contributions of African-American musicians and
10writers; such as Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Leontyne Price,
11Andre Watts, James Baldwin, Richard Wright and Toni Morrison; the American
12culture has been enriched and appreciated around the world; and
AJR28,1,1513 Whereas, African-American sports figures, such as Reggie White of the Green
14Bay Packers, have demonstrated their ability to be not only role models for their
15teams, but also role models off the field for the state and the nation; and
AJR28,1,1716 Whereas, African-Americans have kept alive and derived pride and unity from
17other aspects of their cultural traditions; now, therefore, be it

1Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
2Wisconsin legislature commend African-Americans for their cultural achievements
3and recognize the value of those achievements to African-Americans and to other
4Americans; and, be it further
AJR28,2,8 5Resolved, That in order to encourage everyone in this state to recognize and
6salute the richness of African-American culture, the members of the Wisconsin
7legislature declare the week of February 24, 1997, "African-American Cultural
8Heritage Week".
