AJR90,1,52 Whereas, although 1998 is Wisconsin's sesquicentennial year, it is important
3to remember that for centuries before Wisconsin became a state a vibrant culture,
4that of the American Indians, flourished in the region that was to become this state;
5and
AJR90,1,86 Whereas, during the prestatehood era a number of tribes, including some that
7are still represented in this state, made their home in the land that was to become
8Wisconsin; and
AJR90,1,119 Whereas, among the tribes that have lived in Wisconsin are the Ho Chunk, the
10Chippewa, the Potawatomi, the Oneida, the Menominee, the Mohican-Munsee, the
11Sauk, the Fox, the Sioux and the Ottawa; and
AJR90,1,1412 Whereas, the American Indian culture has persisted and has served as a model,
13for example because of its reverence for nature and the value it places on family
14relationships; and

1Whereas, while maintaining their distinctive culture, Wisconsin's American
2Indians have also become integrated into this state; and
AJR90,2,43 Whereas, individual American Indians have made significant contributions to
4this state and to this nation; and
AJR90,2,75 Whereas, among those contributors was Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., who was
6posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for heroism in the Korean
7War; and
AJR90,2,108 Whereas, Wisconsin's American Indian tribes have retained their identities
9and have continued to function as effective units of government; now, therefore, be
10it
AJR90,2,15 11Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
12Wisconsin legislature commend Wisconsin's American Indian tribes and their
13members for their substantial contributions to this state; encourage them, during
14this sesquicentennial year, to celebrate those contributions and to take pride in them
15and hope that the future will be bright for them; and, be it further
AJR90,2,17 16Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
17resolution to the Wisconsin Sesquicentennial Commission.
