SB271,1,5 1An Act to renumber 38.24 (5) (a) 1.; to renumber and amend 36.27 (3m) (b)
2and 38.24 (5) (b); and to create 36.27 (3m) (b) 2., 38.24 (5) (a) 1g. and 38.24 (5)
3(b) 2. of the statutes; relating to: exempting certain resident students from
4tuition at the University of Wisconsin System and at the technical college
5system.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Current law provides free tuition at the University of Wisconsin (UW) System
to any resident undergraduate student who is enrolled in a bachelor's degree
program and who is the child of a correctional officer, fire fighter or law enforcement
officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state. Similarly, current law provides
free tuition at the technical college system to any resident student who is enrolled
in a program leading to an associate of arts degree, a collegiate transfer program or
a vocational diploma program and who is the child of a fire fighter or law enforcement
officer who was killed in the line of duty in this state.
This bill provides that the child of a slain correctional officer is entitled to free
tuition at the technical college system under the same conditions as described above.
The bill also provides that the surviving spouse of a slain correctional officer, fire
fighter or law enforcement officer is entitled to free tuition at the UW system and at
the technical college system, under the same conditions as described above.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB271, s. 1 1Section 1. 36.27 (3m) (b) of the statutes is renumbered 36.27 (3m) (b) (intro.)

SB271,2,53 36.27 (3m) (b) (intro.) The board shall grant full remission of fees to any
4resident undergraduate student who is enrolled in a bachelor's degree program and
5who is the any of the following:
SB271,2,9 61. The child of a correctional officer, fire fighter or law enforcement officer who
7was killed in the line of duty in this state. The student must be the child of a
8correctional officer, fire fighter or law enforcement officer who was so killed when the
9child was under the age of 21 or before the child was born.
SB271, s. 2 10Section 2. 36.27 (3m) (b) 2. of the statutes is created to read:
SB271,2,1211 36.27 (3m) (b) 2. The surviving spouse of a correctional officer, fire fighter or

SB271, s. 3 13Section 3. 38.24 (5) (a) 1. of the statutes is renumbered 38.27 (5) (a) 1m.
