SB493,1,3 1An Act to create 20.255 (3) (ei) and 115.42 of the statutes; relating to: grants
2to teachers who are certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching
3Standards, granting rule-making authority and making an appropriation.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill creates a grant program administered by the department of public
instruction (DPI) for teachers who participate in the certification program of the
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. DPI may award up to 20 grants
in the 1998-99 school year. Each grant is in the amount of $2,000 in the year that
the teacher successfully participates in the national board's assessment phase and,
upon certification, $2,500 per year for 8 years. The bill also directs DPI to promulgate
rules to administer the grant program.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

The amounts in the schedule for grants to teachers who

5Teaching Standards under s. 115.42.
SB493, s. 3 6Section 3. 115.42 of the statutes is created to read:
SB493,2,13 7115.42 Grants for certification by the National Board for Professional
8Teaching Standards.
(1) The department may award up to 20 grants in the
91998-99 school year to teachers who participate in the certification program of the
10National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Each grant that the
11department awards under this section shall be in the amount of $2,000 in the year
12that the teacher successfully participates in the national board's assessment phase
13and, upon certification, $2,500 per year for 8 years.
SB493,2,15 14(2) (a) The department shall award grants under this section from the
15appropriation under s. 20.255 (3) (ei).
