SJR22,1,1 1Relating to: naming a Seawolf submarine the "Manitowoc".
SJR22,1,32 Whereas, in 2000, construction of the U.S. navy's third, and last, Seawolf class
3submarine will be completed; and
SJR22,1,44 Whereas, that submarine will be the U.S. navy's largest attack submarine; and
SJR22,1,55 Whereas, that submarine has not yet been named; and
SJR22,1,66 Whereas, during World War II 28 submarines were built at Manitowoc; and
SJR22,1,87 Whereas, those submarines sank 132 enemy ships, and one of them, the
8"Rasher", sank 18 enemy ships; and
SJR22,1,99 Whereas, 4 submarines that were built at Manitowoc were sunk in action; and
SJR22,1,1310 Whereas, as we approach Wisconsin's sesquicentennial year it is appropriate
11to recognize Manitowoc's contributions to this country's efforts during World War II,
12which have yet to be acknowledged, and to commemorate Manitowoc's shipbuilders
13of that era; now, therefore, be it
SJR22,1,17 14Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
15Wisconsin legislature suggest that the final Seawolf submarine be named the
16"Manitowoc", which means "Home of the Great Spirits", in order to recognize that
17city's significant submarine-building heritage; and, be it further

1Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
2resolution to Governor Thompson, to each member of this state's congressional
3delegation and to the Secretary of the Navy.
