SJR31,1,1 Relating to: proclaiming November 15, 1997, America Recycles Day.

SJR31,1,4 Whereas, each year more than 208,000,000 tons of municipal solid waste are disposed of in our nation's landfills: more than 4.3 pounds of material buried per person per day; and

SJR31,1,6 Whereas, while our nation has achieved much and has reached an overall recycling rate of more than 25%, more can be done; and

SJR31,1,11 Whereas, to focus our nation's attention on the importance of recycling, businesses, industries, state agencies, nonprofit organizations and individuals have joined together to celebrate America Recycles Day and are encouraging their employers, staff, customers, membership and all citizens to pledge to start or enhance recycling programs and buy recycled products on November 15; and

SJR31,1,14 Whereas, participating in America Recycles Day is one way that citizens can help raise awareness about the ways to reduce the volume of waste by reusing, recycling and buying recycled products; and

SJR31,1,17 Whereas, recycling can save millions of dollars in disposal costs, create jobs and provide an everyday solution for everyone to help protect the environment by avoiding unnecessary consumption of important resources; and

SJR31,2,6 Whereas, state and community leaders can help spread the word about the excellent programs that have been established through partnership efforts joining the public and private sectors, share success stories about the growth of markets for many recyclables and emphasize the importance of buying recycled products, the benefits of expanding the collection of recyclable materials and the benefits of investments in recycling by small and large businesses; now, therefore, be it

SJR31,2,8 Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That November 15, 1997, is proclaimed America Recycles Day.
