SJR40,1,42 Whereas, Norway, which means "Northern Way", is the 5th largest country in
3Europe, covering 125,052 square miles, and has a population of approximately
44,000,000; and
SJR40,1,65 Whereas, Norwegian immigrants have made countless contributions to the
6cultures of Wisconsin and other regions of the United States; and
SJR40,1,87 Whereas, the Norwegian Constitution is the 3rd oldest in the world, being
8predated only by the constitutions of the United States and France; and
SJR40,1,119 Whereas, "Syttende Mai", which is Norwegian for "May 17", celebrates the
10anniversary of the 1814 signing of the Norwegian Constitution that declared
11Norway's independence; and
SJR40,1,1412 Whereas, Norwegian culture can be found throughout Wisconsin in little shops,
13cafes and restaurants, such as the Norske Nook in Osseo, and is celebrated by a
14number of communities' Norwegian Days; and

1Whereas, these communities will celebrate "Syttende Mai" with parades,
2Norwegian displays, Norwegian street music and dancers, "Syttende Mai" King and
3Queen presentations, "Syttende Mai" runs, special museum tours, choral concerts,
4church services and Norwegian drama; and
SJR40,2,55 Whereas, one out of every 12 Wisconsinites claims Norwegian ancestry; and
SJR40,2,76 Whereas, many Wisconsin citizens of Norwegian heritage will participate in
7activities celebrating their heritage during the month of May; now, therefore, be it
SJR40,2,12 8Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the weekend of
9May 15, 16 and 17, 1998, is proclaimed "Syttende Mai Weekend" in the state of
10Wisconsin, and that the citizens of this state are declared honorary Norwegians for
11that weekend and are urged to enjoy lutefisk and lefse and to observe the "Syttende
12Mai Weekend" with appropriate celebrations.
