SJR48,1,32 Whereas, Jerry Madison retired on March 27, 1998, as home secretary for 7th
3District Congressman David Obey after 25 years of service; and
SJR48,1,54 Whereas, he was born in Marshfield in 1935 and started his political life a mere
513 years later distributing literature for President Harry Truman; and
SJR48,1,86 Whereas, Jerry Madison taught high school in both New London and Wausau,
7where he earned the Outstanding Young Educator Award, the State Outstanding
8Young Educator Award and the Friend of Education Award; and
SJR48,1,139 Whereas, Madison served as Chair of the Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids
10Board, where he received an award from the Association of Independent Colleges and
11Universities for outstanding leadership in the advancement of independent higher
12education in the state of Wisconsin through support of student financial policies to
13promote educational diversity and freedom of choice; and

1Whereas, he discussed politics with Harry Truman while riding the train
2through Wisconsin and brought presidential candidate John F. Kennedy to speak to
3his class; and
SJR48,2,54 Whereas, Jerry met his wife, Nelda Seer, in Milwaukee, at a National Young
5Democratic Convention; and
SJR48,2,76 Whereas, the Madisons have 2 children, Mark and Elliott, as well as a
7granddaughter, Madeline; and
SJR48,2,98 Whereas, Jerry and Nelda are known to a legion of young political activists as
9teachers, advisers, mentors and friends; and
SJR48,2,1110 Whereas, Jerry Madison is famous as a storyteller, joke maker and trivia
11master; now, therefore, be it
SJR48,2,16 12Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
13Wisconsin legislature recognize Jerry Madison for his many accomplishments and
14salute him for his contributions to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, the 7th
15Congressional District and the state of Wisconsin and wish him a long, healthy and
16enjoyable retirement; and, be it further
SJR48,2,18 17Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
18resolution to Jerry Madison.
