AB59,1,3 An Act to amend 341.25 (1) (b), 341.26 (2) (intro.), 341.26 (3) (a) 1., 341.297 (1) and 341.297 (2) of the statutes; relating to: motor vehicle registration expiration dates.

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau

Current law specifies the expiration date of certain motor vehicles registered on a biennial or 5-year basis. This bill eliminates specific expiration dates for the registration of certain motor vehicles registered on a biennial or 5-year basis.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB59, s. 1 Section 1. 341.25 (1) (b) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB59,1,8 341.25 (1) (b) For each motorcycle or moped with a curb weight of 1,499 pounds or less, except a specially designed vehicle under s. 341.067, which is designed for the transportation of persons rather than property, a biennial fee of $23. Registration plates issued under this paragraph expire on April 30 of even-numbered years.

AB59, s. 2 Section 2. 341.26 (2) (intro.) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB59,2,7 341.26 (2) Five-dollar fee for 5-year registration of certain vehicles. (intro.) A registration under this subsection expires on December 31 every 5th year. The first 5-year registration period under this subsection terminates on December 31, 1993, except that the department may specify the expiration date of initial registration under this subsection. A registration fee of $5 shall be paid to the department for the registration of each of the following vehicles:

AB59, s. 3 Section 3. 341.26 (3) (a) 1. of the statutes is amended to read:

AB59,2,11 341.26 (3) (a) 1. For each farm truck having a gross weight of 12,000 pounds or less, a biennial fee of $45. Registration plates issued under this subdivision expire on the last day of February of even-numbered years.

AB59, s. 4 Section 4. 341.297 (1) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB59,2,15 341.297 (1) A motorcycle or moped, as specified in s. 341.25 (1) (b). The registration period for a motorcycle or moped begins on May 1 of an even-numbered year and ends on April 30 of the next even-numbered year.

AB59, s. 5 Section 5. 341.297 (2) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB59,2,20 341.297 (2) A farm truck having a gross weight of 12,000 pounds or less, as specified in s. 341.26 (3) (a) 1. The registration period for such a farm truck begins on March 1 of an even-numbered year and ends on the last day of February of the next even-numbered year.

AB59, s. 6 Section 6. Initial applicability.

AB59,2,24 (1) Motor vehicle registration expiration. This act first applies to vehicles registered by the department of transportation on the effective date of this subsection.
