Current law requires schools to observe certain days, such as the birthday of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The bill requires schools to observe the birthday of
James Madison, on March 16.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB601, s. 1 3Section 1. 118.02 of the statutes is amended to read:
AB601,2,8 4118.02 Special observance days. On the following days when school is held
5the day shall be appropriately observed: January 15, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
6Day; February 12; February 15, Susan B. Anthony's birthday; February 22; March
74, Casimir Pulaski Day; March 16, James Madison's birthday; April 13, American
8Creed Day; April 22, Environmental Awareness Day; September 16, Mildred Fish
9Harnack Day; September 17, U.S. Constitution Day; September 28, Frances Willard

1Day; October 9, Leif Erikson Day; October 12; November 11; and Wednesday of the
23rd week in September, as part of Wonderful Wisconsin Week under s. 14.16 (8),
3Wisconsin Day. If any such day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the observance shall
4be on a school day immediately preceding or following. If school is held on June 14,
5that day shall be appropriately observed as Robert M. La Follette, Sr. Day. If the
6governor by proclamation sets apart one day to be designated as Arbor and Bird Day,
7under s. 14.16 (1), that day shall be appropriately observed; otherwise, the last
8Friday in April shall be observed as Arbor Day.
