AJR38,1,42 Whereas, Francis Conway was born on March 5, 1902, to Michael and
3Catherine Conway in Lyndon Station, Wisconsin, and died March 3, 1999, in Stanley,
4Wisconsin; and
AJR38,1,65 Whereas, Mr. Conway graduated from Mauston High School, was assistant
6cashier at Lyndon State Bank, and was a state bank examiner; and
AJR38,1,107 Whereas, in the 1920s, Mr. Conway was instrumental in creating Thorp
8Finance Corporation, which started with an investment of $5,000, and eventually
9grew into a multimillion dollar company and one of the largest consumer loan firms
10in the Midwest; and
AJR38,1,1311 Whereas, as chairman of Thorp Finance Corporation, Mr. Conway kept the
12company headquarters in Thorp until he retired in 1969, when the firm had 137 loan
13offices in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri; and
AJR38,2,214 Whereas, Mr. Conway served on the Consumer Credit Review Board, the
15Banking Review Board, the Marquette University Board, as a delegate to

1Democratic national conventions from the time of President Franklin Roosevelt
2through the presidency of Lyndon Johnson; and
AJR38,2,53 Whereas, Mr. Conway was past president of the American Finance Conference
4and the American Industrial Bankers Association, and was chosen as Irishman of
5the year by the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin; and
AJR38,2,86 Whereas, Mr. Conway and his wife, Philomene, were active in the local
7community and donated a library building and a park to Thorp; now, therefore, be

AJR38,2,12 9Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature commend Mr. Francis Conway's many years of devoted public
11service, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family
12and friends; and, be it further
AJR38,2,15 13Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
14resolution to Mr. Conway's wife, Philomene; to his children, Mary Elizabeth "Mitzi",
15Rosanne, Catherine, Jane and Connaught; and to his brother, Bernard.
