AJR45,1,3 1Relating to: memorializing Congress to not reduce the number of beds for intensive
2care and surgery at the Veteran's Administration's Medical Center at Iron
3Mountain, Michigan.
AJR45,1,64 Whereas, many of the veterans in northeast Wisconsin rely on the Veteran's
5Administration's Medical Center at Iron Mountain, Michigan, for intensive care and
6surgery; and
AJR45,1,87 Whereas, the beds at the center are always full, in spite of the fact that at least
840% of the patients are from at least 70 miles away from the center; and
AJR45,1,119 Whereas, the Veteran's Administration is planning to eliminate 9 of the 17 beds
10at the center, and to convert the space to a monitored and acute stabilization unit;
11and
AJR45,1,1512 Whereas, seriously ill patients will be forced to be transported to Milwaukee,
13which is 220 to 440 miles away, thereby separating them from their family and
14friends at a critical time in their lives and subjecting them to additional health risks;

1Whereas, this reduction in beds represents a drastic decrease in the health
2services available to seriously ill veterans who unselfishly served America in its
3times of need; now, therefore, be it
AJR45,2,7 4Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
5legislature urges Congress to not reduce the number of beds for intensive care and
6surgery at the Veteran's Administration's Medical Center at Iron Mountain,
7Michigan; and, be it further
AJR45,2,12 8Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
9resolution to the President of the United States, to the president and secretary of the
10U.S. senate, to the speaker and clerk of the U.S. house of representatives and to each
11member of the congressional delegation from this state attesting the adoption of this
12joint resolution by the 1999 legislature of the state of Wisconsin.
