AJR81,1,42 Whereas, George Reedy was born on August 5, 1917, in East Chicago, Indiana,
3and died on March 21, 1999, at St. John's Nursing Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
4at the age of 81; and
AJR81,1,65 Whereas, Mr. Reedy graduated with a Bachelor's degree in sociology from the
6University of Chicago in 1938; and
AJR81,1,87 Whereas, after graduation, Mr. Reedy joined the Washington Bureau of The
8United Press as a reporter covering Congress and government agencies; and
AJR81,1,109 Whereas, he served in the Army Air Forces during World War II as a radar
10intelligence officer and participated in bombing missions in the Pacific theatre; and
AJR81,1,1311 Whereas, Mr. Reedy served as a special assistant to Vice President Lyndon
12Johnson, as press secretary after Johnson became President in 1964, and as a special
13consultant to the White House on labor matters in 1968; and
AJR81,2,314 Whereas, he was selected to be the dean of the Marquette University School of
15Journalism in 1971, served as the Neiman Professor of Journalism, resigned the

1deanship in 1977 to concentrate on full-time teaching and research, but retained the
2academic chair until 1990 when he became professor emeritus, and continued to
3teach and write at Marquette University until 1996; and
AJR81,2,64 Whereas, Mr. Reedy wrote 7 books, including a 1982 memoir of President
5Johnson, in which he warned that the presidency was endangered if American
6leaders become insulated and isolated from the people; and
AJR81,2,107 Whereas, Mr. Reedy was a passionate and literate defender of the watchdog role
8of the media in modern society, a popular and well-loved teacher, and touched the
9lives of many through his work as a reporter, author and lecturer; now, therefore, be

AJR81,2,14 11Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
12Wisconsin legislature commend Mr. George Reedy's many years of devoted public
13service, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family
14and friends; and, be it further
AJR81,2,17 15Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
16resolution to Mr. Reedy's sons, Michael Reedy, of Stoughton, WI, and William Reedy,
17of Moretown, VT.
