2STH 27 as the "Donald K. `Deke' Slayton Memorial Highway".

This bill directs the department of transportation to designate and, upon
receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, mark a portion of STH 27
in Monroe County as the "Donald K. `Deke' Slayton Memorial Highway" to honor
Donald K. "Deke" Slayton, one of the original Mercury astronauts of this country and
a participant in the first joint United States-Soviet space mission.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB185, s. 1 3Section 1. 84.1041 of the statutes is created to read:
SB185,2,3 484.1041 Donald K. "Deke" Slayton Memorial Highway. (1) The
5department shall designate and, subject to sub. (2), mark STH 27 commencing at its
6junction with I 90 and proceeding southerly to the Monroe County line as the "Donald
7K. `Deke' Slayton Memorial Highway" as a living memorial to and in honor of Donald

1K. "Deke" Slayton, who brought credit to this state and, in particular, Monroe County
2for his contribution to this country's space program as one of the 7 original astronauts
3and as a participant in the first joint United States-Soviet space mission.
SB185,2,10 4(2) Upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, including
5any county, city, village or town, to cover the cost of erecting and maintaining
6markers along the route specified in sub. (1) to clearly identify to motorists the
7designation of the route as the "Donald K. `Deke' Slayton Memorial Highway", the
8department shall erect and maintain the markers. No state funds, other than from
9the receipt of contributions under this subsection, may be expended for the erection
10or maintenance of the markers.
