Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson began his life of making the world a better place
3on January 12, 1908, in Bayfield, Wisconsin; and

Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson attended the Northland College, where he was a
5member of the varsity basketball team and graduated from University of Wisconsin
6(UW); and

Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was a founder of the Progressive Party of
8Wisconsin in 1934 and was elected to the Wisconsin state assembly in 1936 where
9he served 3 terms, as well as serving 4 terms as clerk of courts for Dane County from
101968-76; and

Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was committed to the principles of the Progressive
12Movement and to the needs of the less fortunate in our society; and

Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was an avid promoter of the winter sport of curling,
14founding the U.S. Curling Foundation and serving as its first vice president from
151956-60; and

1Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was an avid sports lover, supporting football and
2basketball at UW-Madison and acted as a liaison between the athletic department
3and the legislature during his 3 terms in the assembly; and

Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson founded a number of successful businesses and
7encouraged the efforts of others to become private entrepreneurs; and

Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson's love of community involvement manifested in his
9charter membership in the Madison Pen & Mike Club, the Madison Press Club, the
10Elks Club, Masonic Lodge, Zor Shrine, Wisconsin Teacher Union, Musicians Union,
11Kiwanis Club, Madison Club, and the First Baptist Church of Madison; and

Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was deeply committed to his wife Helen and their
13family, and was particularly proud of his 4 children — Mary, Jay, Laurene and
14Geraldine — and their accomplishments in life; now, therefore, be it

15Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin
16legislature does hereby commend the life and exemplary public service Laurie E.
17Carlson, and extend its sympathies to his children and their families; and, be it
