AB950,1,2 1An Act to create 36.53 of the statutes; relating to: authorizing a program for
2tuition gift certificates at the University of Wisconsin System.

This bill authorizes the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin (UW)
System to establish a program of gift certificates for the payment of tuition at the UW
System. The individual named in a gift certificate may use the certificate to pay all
or a portion of his or her tuition at any UW campus or for a UW study-abroad
program. The gift certificate expires after two years and is not transferable except
to a parent, child, spouse, or sibling.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB950, s. 1 3Section 1. 36.53 of the statutes is created to read:
AB950,1,6 436.53 Tuition gift certificates. (1) The board may establish a gift certificate
5program for the payment of nonresident tuition and academic fees. The program
6shall include all of the following components:

1(a) The individual named in a gift certificate may use the gift certificate to pay
2all or a portion of his or her nonresident tuition or academic fees, or for a
3study-abroad program, at any institution or college campus.
AB950,2,54 (b) A gift certificate is not transferable, except to a parent, child, spouse, or
5sibling of the named individual in par. (a).
AB950,2,96 (c) A gift certificate expires 2 years after the date of purchase, except that if the
7individual named in par. (a) is called into state active duty under ch. 21 or into active
8service with the U.S. armed forces the board shall extend the expiration period of the
9gift certificate by the amount of time spent in such duty or service.
AB950,2,1010 (d) The purchase price of a gift certificate is not refundable.
AB950,2,12 11(2) (a) The board may charge no more than the actual processing cost as a fee
12for each sale of a gift certificate.
AB950,2,1413 (b) All moneys received by the board from the sales of gift certificates under this
14section shall be credited to the appropriation account under s. 20.285 (1) (im).
