AJR80,1,42 Whereas, Captain John F. "Hans" Kurth was born on February 16, 1973, in
3Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and died on March 13, 2004, as a result of a roadside bomb
4in Tikrit, Iraq; and
AJR80,1,75 Whereas, Captain Kurth graduated with honors from Columbus High School
6in 1991, where he ran track and contributed to Columbus winning a state football
7championship; and
AJR80,1,118 Whereas, Captain Kurth received an appointment to West Point Military
9Academy, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society, and graduated
10in 1995 with a bachelor of science degree in international relations and was
11commissioned a 2nd lieutenant; and
AJR80,2,212 Whereas, Captain Kurth went on to continue his military education by
13successfully completing: Airborne School; Air Assault Course; Master Fitness
14Trainer Course; Ranger Course; Infantry Officer Basic Course; Infantry Officer

1Advance Course; Combined Arms and Services Staff School; and Bradley Infantry
2Fighting Vehicle Commander's Course; and
AJR80,2,73 Whereas, Captain Kurth's military assignments included: rifle platoon leader;
4anti-armor platoon leader; executive officer; battalion S-4 logistics officer at Fort
5Bragg, North Carolina, and Albania and Kosovo; assistant S-3 operations officer at
6Conn Barracks, Germany; battalion S-5 civilian military operations officer in
7Kosovo; and company commander at Conn Barracks, Germany and Iraq; and
AJR80,2,138 Whereas, Captain Kurth's awards and decorations include: the Army Service
9Ribbon; the Humanitarian Service Medal; the Kosovo Service Medal; the National
10Defense Service Medal (2nd award); Army Achievement Medal, 2nd Oak Leaf
11Cluster; Parachutist Badge; Ranger Tab; Expert Infantryman Badge; Combat
12Infantryman Badge; Purple Heart (posthumously); and Bronze Star
13(posthumously); and
AJR80,2,1514 Whereas, Captain Kurth made the ultimate sacrifice for his country while
15advancing the cause of freedom for the Iraqi people; and
AJR80,2,1716 Whereas, Captain Kurth will always be remembered for his bravery and
17courage and will never be forgotten; now, therefore, be it
AJR80,2,21 18Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
19Wisconsin legislature commend the life of Captain John F. "Hans" Kurth, express
20their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and,
21be it further
AJR80,3,2 22Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
23resolution to Captain Kuth's father and mother, John and Retta Kurth, of Columbus;

1to his sister, Mandy Swomia, of Sun Prairie; and to his son, John Aleksander Kurth,
2of Anderson, South Carolina.
