AR17,1,2 1Relating to: celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of public charter
2schools during National Charter Schools Week, April 28 to May 2, 2003.
AR17,1,43 Whereas, the 4th annual National Charter Schools Week is being celebrated
4this week in Wisconsin and throughout the country; and
AR17,1,75 Whereas, Wisconsin, in 1993, was among the first 10 states to enact charter
6schools legislation and is a leader among the states in fostering community choices
7in public education through charter schools; and
AR17,1,98 Whereas, 128 public charter schools, serving more than 19,000 students, are
9operating throughout Wisconsin in the 2002-2003 school year; and
AR17,1,1210 Whereas, Wisconsin's charter schools initiative is intended to improve student
11achievement, drive educational innovation, expand educational choices of parents
12and students, and foster continuous improvements in all public schools; and
AR17,2,213 Whereas, charter schools are open to all students, accountable to their
14authorizer, employ staff certified by the Department of Public Instruction, and
15participate in the state assessment system and, further, that charter schools are

1intended to stimulate change, innovation, and creativity that enhances student
2learning; now, therefore, be it
AR17,2,6 3Resolved by the assembly, That the Wisconsin assembly joins the governor,
4state and federal officials, and all citizens in Wisconsin in celebrating the
5accomplishments and contributions of public charter schools during National
6Charter Schools Week, April 28 to May 2, 2003.
