AR17,1,2 Relating to: celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of public charter schools during National Charter Schools Week, April 28 to May 2, 2003.

AR17,1,4 Whereas, the 4th annual National Charter Schools Week is being celebrated this week in Wisconsin and throughout the country; and

AR17,1,7 Whereas, Wisconsin, in 1993, was among the first 10 states to enact charter schools legislation and is a leader among the states in fostering community choices in public education through charter schools; and

AR17,1,9 Whereas, 128 public charter schools, serving more than 19,000 students, are operating throughout Wisconsin in the 2002-2003 school year; and

AR17,1,12 Whereas, Wisconsin's charter schools initiative is intended to improve student achievement, drive educational innovation, expand educational choices of parents and students, and foster continuous improvements in all public schools; and

AR17,2,2 Whereas, charter schools are open to all students, accountable to their authorizer, employ staff certified by the Department of Public Instruction, and participate in the state assessment system and, further, that charter schools are intended to stimulate change, innovation, and creativity that enhances student learning; now, therefore, be it

AR17,2,6 Resolved by the assembly, That the Wisconsin assembly joins the governor, state and federal officials, and all citizens in Wisconsin in celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of public charter schools during National Charter Schools Week, April 28 to May 2, 2003.
