SB559,1,2 1An Act relating to: revising various provisions of the statutes for the purpose
2of correcting errors and supplying omissions (Revisor's Correction Bill).

This revisor's correction bill revises section 59.20 (2) of the statutes to take into
account the amendment of Article VI, Section 4 (1), and the creation of Article VI,
Section 4 (3) (c), of the Wisconsin Constitution, which changed the term of office for
sheriffs from two to four years.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB559, s. 1 3Section 1. 59.20 (2) of the statutes is renumbered 59.20 (2) (a) and amended
4to read:
SB559,2,25 59.20 (2) (a) A Except as provided in par. (c), a county clerk, treasurer, sheriff,
6coroner, clerk of circuit court, register of deeds, and surveyor, who shall be a
7registered land surveyor, shall be elected in each county for full terms at the general
8election held in each even-numbered year. The regular term of office of each such

1officer shall commence on the first Monday of January next succeeding his or her
2election and shall continue 2 years and until his or her successor qualifies.
SB559,2,16 3(c) In lieu of electing a surveyor in any county, the board may, by resolution,
4designate that the duties under ss. 59.45 (1) and 59.74 (2) be performed by any
5registered land surveyor employed by the county. In Except as provided in par. (b),
6in
any county containing one town only, the county board may, by resolution,
7designate any county office a part-time position, combine 2 or more county offices,
8and, if concurred in by the town board, combine the offices of county clerk and town
9clerk and any other county and town offices, provided that the offices combined are
10not incompatible and the combination is not expressly forbidden by law. If the town
11board so concurs, the election may be for the combined office and no separate election
12for the town office shall be held until after the county board has by resolution decided
13to abandon the combination and the town board has concurred by resolution. In
14counties having a population of 500,000 or more, no county coroner or county
15surveyor may be elected. In any county in which a medical examiner system is
16instituted, no coroner may be elected.
SB559, s. 2 17Section 2. 59.20 (2) (b) of the statutes is created to read:
SB559,2,2118 59.20 (2) (b) A sheriff shall be elected for each county at the general election
19in 2002 and quadrennially thereafter. The regular term of the office of sheriff
20commences on the first Monday in January next succeeding the sheriff's election and
21shall continue 4 years and until his or her successor qualifies.
