SJR37,1,1 1Relating to: the life and public service of Walter L. Merten.
SJR37,1,32 Whereas, Walter L. Merten was born on December 11, 1922, and died on
3November 8, 2001, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and
SJR37,1,44 Whereas, he graduated from Marquette University High School; and
SJR37,1,65 Whereas, he earned a B.A. degree from Marquette University and an LL.B
6degree in 1950; and
SJR37,1,77 Whereas, Mr. Merten married Grace M. Stieber; and
SJR37,1,98 Whereas, he served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II from
91943 to 1946 in the Philippines and Japan; and
SJR37,1,1210 Whereas, after his discharge from military service, at the request of the War
11Department, Mr. Merten served as a civilian military officer in Japan, as a specialist
12in government and education; and
SJR37,1,1413 Whereas, Mr. Merten was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1950
14(Milwaukee, 19th), serving in the 1951 and 1953 sessions; and

1Whereas, he was subsequently elected to the Wisconsin senate in 1954 (5th
2Senate District), serving in the 1955 and 1957 sessions; and
SJR37,2,43 Whereas, during his tenure in the legislature, Mr. Merten was the assistant
4majority floor leader during the 1957 session; now, therefore, be it
SJR37,2,8 5Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
6Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Walter L. Merten
7contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and
8extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
SJR37,2,10 9Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
10resolution to Mr. Merten's wife, Grace M. Merten, and to his sister, Florence Fridal.
