Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, certain highway routes and bridges have been designated
and marked to memorialize, commemorate, or recognize certain individuals or
events. This bill directs the Department of Transportation to designate and, upon
receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, mark the route of STH 124
from I 94 in Eau Claire County and proceeding northeasterly to STH 64 in Chippewa
County as the "Tommy G. Thompson Highway" in recognition and appreciation of the
public career of Tommy G. Thompson, who served with distinction for 14 years as the
governor of this state and subsequently as the U.S. secretary of health and human
services. No state funds, other than from contributions from interested parties, may
be used for the erection or maintenance of any markers on STH 124 to identify that
portion of the highway as the "Tommy G. Thompson Highway."
For further information see the state and local fiscal estimate, which will be
printed as an appendix to this bill.
