AJR58,1,43 Whereas, 10 million children under the age of 5 die annually around the world;

AJR58,1,7 5Whereas, two-thirds of the 10 million deaths of children under the age of 5 have
6been deemed preventable by leading health organizations through the use of
7existing, cost-effective solutions; and
AJR58,1,98 Whereas, the United Nations declared as one of the 8 Millennium Development
9Goals to "Reduce by two thirds the mortality rate among children under five"; and
AJR58,1,1110 Whereas, reaching the age of 5 significantly increases a child's chance of
11survival; and
AJR58,1,1312 Whereas, child survival is a key element of global health and is of utmost
13importance to the United States and all countries of the world; and
AJR58,1,15 14Whereas, the people of the state of Wisconsin recognize the importance of global
15issues; and

1Whereas, the people of the state of Wisconsin recognize the uniqueness of
2children and care about the fate of their lives both in their state and country and
3around the world; and
AJR58,2,5 4Whereas, PBS will broadcast a documentary entitled "Rx for Survival - A
5Global Health Challenge" that will examine topics in global health; and
AJR58,2,86 Whereas, local public broadcasting stations around the U.S., including
7Wisconsin Public Television, will spearhead an impact campaign designed to raise
8awareness of issues of global health and child survival; and
AJR58,2,109 Whereas, Wisconsin Public Television will host events in the Dane County area
10throughout the month of October; now, therefore, be it
AJR58,2,13 11Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature of
12the state of Wisconsin hereby declares the week of October 31st as Child Survival
13Week.
