AJR74,1,1 Relating to: the life and public service of Edward G. Jackamonis.

AJR74,1,3 Whereas, Edward G. Jackamonis was born on October 19, 1939, in New Britain, Connecticut, and died on January 22, 2006, in Milwaukee; and

AJR74,1,6 Whereas, Edward G. Jackamonis earned a B.A. degree with honors from Northeastern University, Boston, in 1962; and an M.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964; and

AJR74,1,8 Whereas, Edward G. Jackamonis married Barbara Bastenbeck in August 1962; and

AJR74,1,11 Whereas, before his election to the Wisconsin assembly, Edward G. Jackamonis was an instructor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-Waukesha where he intended to teach politics rather than getting into it; and

AJR74,1,13 Whereas, Edward G. Jackamonis was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1970, serving in the 1971 through 1981 sessions; and

AJR74,2,2 Whereas, before his election to leadership positions, Edward G. Jackamonis served on the State Affairs Committee (chairperson, 1973), Environmental Quality Resources (vice-chairperson, 1973), Joint Legislative Council, and the National Conference of State Legislatures Ad Hoc Cable Television Committee (1974); and

AJR74,2,5 Whereas, during his tenure in the legislature, Edward G. Jackamonis was elected speaker pro tempore (1975 session) and became known for his knowledge of the rules of the legislature; and

AJR74,2,7 Whereas, Mr. Jackamonis was subsequently elected speaker of the assembly for the 1977 through 1981 sessions; and

AJR74,2,10 Whereas, during his tenure as speaker, Edward G. Jackamonis was an efficient, businesslike leader of the assembly who focused on improving the internal operations of the assembly; and

AJR74,2,12 Whereas, political columnist John Wyngaard termed Edward G. Jackamonis "one of the most effective speakers" in Wisconsin history; and

AJR74,2,15 Whereas, as speaker, Edward G. Jackamonis streamlined assembly administrative and management procedures and was a fierce defender of the authority of the legislative branch; and

AJR74,2,21 Whereas, after his retirement from the legislature, Mr. Jackamonis became the executive director of the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (1983 to 1987); director of the Program Development Group of the New York State Assembly (1988 to 1991); deputy city director of administration for the city of Milwaukee (1991 to 1994); and an employee of the Milwaukee Department of Public Works (1994 to 1999); now, therefore, be it

AJR74,2,25 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Edward G. Jackamonis contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further

AJR74,3,3 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Mr. Jackamonis' wife, Barbara, his daughter, April Sutrick, his son, Jason, and his sister, Constance Vogell.
