3Bernice Scott, entering this world on April 27, 1927, in Marion, Alabama; and
AJR78,1,64 Whereas, Coretta Scott King was an excellent student, graduating first in her
5high school class, and then attending Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, and
6the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts; and
AJR78,1,107 Whereas, Coretta Scott King, in 1952, met a young Boston University theology
8student, who, on their first date told her that she possessed the 4 things that he
9thought important for a wife to have: "character, personality, intelligence, and
10beauty"; and
AJR78,1,1311 Whereas, Coretta Scott King married Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on June 18,
121953, before 350 adoring wedding guests, thus commencing an extraordinary yet
13brief, life journey together; and
AJR78,2,214 Whereas, Coretta Scott King was the perfect partner to and constant
15companion of her husband, Dr. King, exhibiting unparalleled fortitude, strength,

1and calmness during the ordeals and tensions surrounding the Montgomery Bus
2Boycott Movement; and
AJR78,2,53 Whereas, Coretta Scott King and Dr. King were the proud parents of 4
4remarkable children, Yolonda, Martin III, Dexter, and Bernice, who each, in turn, are
5making significant contributions to society; and
AJR78,2,86 Whereas, Coretta Scott King, following the shocking assassination of Dr. King
7in 1968, elected not to shrink from public service, and instead embraced the legacy
8of her late husband with unprecedented dignity, courage, and grace; and
AJR78,2,139 Whereas, Coretta Scott King will be forever remembered as the architect and
10driving force behind many worthwhile initiatives that include working relentlessly
11to establish a national holiday for her slain husband, founding the King Center for
12Nonviolent Social Change, and convening the New Coalition of Conscience, which
13brings together 750 civil and human rights organizations; now, therefore, be it

15Wisconsin legislature pay their respects to the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her
16service and her lifelong dedication to the civil rights crusade, and her personal quest
17to make America and the world a more humane and loving place.
