AJR90,1,42 Whereas, Martin F. Stein came from a modest background, the son of
3immigrant parents who came to this country with little more than the clothes on
4their backs; and
AJR90,1,65 Whereas, Marty Stein worked as a child to support his family's struggling
6grocery store; and
AJR90,1,87 Whereas, Marty learned the value of hard work and was filled with the spirit
8of the American dream; and
AJR90,1,129 Whereas, he started a small pharmacy with a friend, which grew into a large
10enterprise and then followed other business ventures like Stein Health Care
11Services Inc., which provided health services and included stores like Stein Optical,
12the leading provider of eye care in the Milwaukee area; and
AJR90,1,1513 Whereas, Marty never forgot his roots, playing a central role in the Jewish
14community, from his role as chairman for the United Jewish Appeal to his meeting
15with the Prime Minister of Israel in 1988, he earned an international reputation; and

1Whereas, Marty Stein never forgot his background and understood the trials
2and difficulties of families trying to make ends meet; and
AJR90,2,73 Whereas, Marty never missed the chance to help those in need, and wanted to
4help everyone achieve their potential, his belief in and love of humanity led him to
5actively help countless groups including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro
6Milwaukee, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, America's Black Holocaust
7Museum, and the Milwaukee Jewish Home and Care Center; and
AJR90,2,118 Whereas, Marty cofounded the Jewish Foundation for Economic Opportunity
9which established a revolving loan fund to support minority entrepreneurs and
10minority-controlled small businesses, and he is also considered responsible for the
11creation of the Betty Brinn Children's Museum; and
AJR90,2,1412 Whereas, Marty Stein was a modest man who saw his charitable deeds not as
13evidence of his personal greatness and generosity, but as the natural responsibility
14of one in his position; now, therefore, be it
AJR90,2,19 15Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
16Wisconsin legislature commend the life of Martin F. Stein with the hope that by his
17work and generosity we all can continue his good deeds to enrich the lives of everyone
18in our communities. His memory will be preserved by our work together and for each
19other; and, be it further

21resolution to his sons Dan and Larry, and his sister, Bonnie Kammer.
