AJR97,1,42 Whereas, Robert M. Berns was born on June 27, 1920, in Sister Bay, Wisconsin,
3and died on Sunday, March 5, 2006, at his home, in Sister Bay, Wisconsin, at the age
4of 85; and
AJR97,1,75 Whereas, Mr. Berns attended local schools and graduated from Gibraltar High
6School before attending St. Norbert College in De Pere and Marquette University in
7Milwaukee; and
AJR97,1,98 Whereas, in 1941 Mr. Berns, with his brother Les, established Berns Bros.
9Lumber Company and managed a sawmill and the sale of ice and coal; and
AJR97,1,1210 Whereas, Mr. Berns contributed to the war effort by providing lumber for
11shipping essential war material for the Allied forces and in 1944 further served his
12country as a commissioned officer in the United States Army; and
AJR97,2,213 Whereas, the life of Mr. Berns was best exemplified by his tireless dedication
14to his community and his charitable service, including his service to the Door County
15Memorial Hospital and Scandia Village assisted living facility, and as president of

1the Sister Bay Lions Club, president of the Advancement Association, president of
2the Nor-Door Medical Clinic, and a trustee of St. Rosalia's Parish; and
AJR97,2,53 Whereas, Mr. Berns was a member of the Sister Bay village board, a member
4of the Sister Bay planning commission, and PTA president of the Gibraltar Area
5School District; now, therefore, be it
AJR97,2,9 6Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
7Wisconsin legislature commend the life of Robert M. Berns, whose dedication to his
8family, community, and country will serve as an example of how great a person can
9be and the positive impact a person can have on others; and, be it further
AJR97,2,13 10Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
11resolution to Mr. Berns's wife, Judy; his brothers Lester Berns, Phillip Berns, and
12Lewis Berns; and his daughters Pamela Berns, Kathy Johnson, Kerry Rossmeissl,
13and Kelly Franzmeier.
