AR10,1,1 1Relating to: celebrating March 5, 2005, as St. Piran's Day.
AR10,1,32 Whereas, March 5 is St. Piran's Day, a day honoring the patron saint of tin
3miners; and
AR10,1,54 Whereas, many of the tin miners who came to the Wisconsin Territory, starting
5in 1827, came from Cornwall, England; and
AR10,1,76 Whereas, the Cornish were the first major foreign immigrant group to come to
7Wisconsin; and
AR10,1,108 Whereas, the Cornish settled largely in the southwestern part of the state, in
9what is now Grant, Iowa, and Lafayette counties, to mine lead, using generations of
10experience in deep, hard-rock mining to bring prosperity to the new territory; and
AR10,1,1211 Whereas, a sizeable number of Cornish also settled in and around Palmyra, in
12southeastern Wisconsin, to farm; and
AR10,2,213 Whereas, the Cornish, who were strongly opposed to slavery, played an
14important role in the Civil War by constituting a significant part of 2 companies that

1were formed in Mineral Point, Co. I, known as the Miner's Guard, and Co. E, known
2as the Farmer's Guard; and
AR10,2,43 Whereas, the traditional Cornish miners' way of life can be experienced today
4at the Pendarvis historic site in Mineral Point; and
AR10,2,85 Whereas, the considerable skill of Cornish stone masons is still in abundant
6evidence to all who stroll through the lovely streets of Mineral Point, Linden,
7Shullsburg, or Platteville to admire the many homes and buildings built by the
8Cornish; and
AR10,2,119 Whereas, a Midwest Cornish Festival is held in Mineral Point each year, during
10the last weekend in September, featuring Cornish food, music, dance, and guests
11from Cornwall; now, therefore, be it
AR10,2,16 12Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin assembly
13salute all of the persons of Cornish descent for their tremendous contributions to this
14state, express appreciation for those persons who have kept alive Cornish culture,
15tradition, history, and food and join all Wisconsinites who cherish their Cornish
16heritage in celebrating St. Piran's Day on March 5, 2005.
