SJR45,1,32 Whereas, the American Cancer Society reports that breast cancer is the most
3frequently diagnosed cancer in Wisconsin women; and
SJR45,1,54 Whereas, breast cancer is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death in Wisconsin
5women; and
SJR45,1,86 Whereas, this year there will be 211,240 new cases of breast cancer and 40,410
7deaths from breast cancer in the United States and 4,130 new cases of breast cancer
8and 790 deaths from breast cancer in Wisconsin; and
SJR45,1,119 Whereas, the American Cancer Society recommends yearly mammograms for
10women beginning at age 40 and clinical breast exams every 3 years for women in
11their 20s and 30s; and
SJR45,1,1412 Whereas, the recent declines in breast cancer mortality have been attributed
13to the regular use of screening mammography and to improvements in treatment;

1Whereas, the 5-year survival rate for localized breast cancer (cancer that has
2not spread) is 98 percent, but the survival rate declines if the cancer has spread
3regionally or distantly; and
SJR45,2,54 Whereas, currently 63 percent of breast cancers are diagnosed at a localized
5stage; and
SJR45,2,86 Whereas, African-American, Hispanic/Latina, and American Indian/Alaska
7Native women are more likely to be diagnosed at regional and distant stages than
8Caucasian and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders; and
SJR45,2,109 Whereas, over one-third of Wisconsin women over age 40 have not had a recent
10mammogram; and
SJR45,2,1211 Whereas, it is in the public interest to promote public awareness of the benefits
12of early detection, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer; and
SJR45,2,1513 Whereas, it is appropriate for the state of Wisconsin to join with its citizens,
14their families, and loved ones throughout the state in recognizing the importance of
15this disease; now, therefore, be it
SJR45,2,20 16Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
17Wisconsin legislature proclaim the month of October as Breast Cancer Awareness
18Month to promote early detection, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer and
19to encourage women to be screened according to the American Cancer Society's
20guidelines.
