SJR66,1,42 Whereas, Private First Class Anthony "Alex" Gaunky, of Sparta, Wisconsin,
3was born on August 13, 1986, and died on November 18, 2005, following injuries
4sustained after an attack during combat operations near Beyji, Iraq; and
SJR66,1,75 Whereas, PFC Gaunky served with honor and distinction as a combat engineer,
6in the 3rd Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne
7Division, stationed in Iraq as a part of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and
SJR66,1,108 Whereas, he graduated from Sparta High School in 2004, where he played
9French horn in the school band, was a member of the chess club, managed the
10Spartans football team, and was voted the best dancer in his graduating class; and
SJR66,2,211 Whereas, following graduation, PFC Gaunky fulfilled a childhood dream and
12enlisted with the army, reflecting his family's valued tradition of service to the
13country as set forth by his 3 older brothers, Adam Gaunky, a naval petty officer
14serving aboard the USS Tarawa, Donleigh Gaunky, a sergeant serving with the

1army's 18th Airborne, and Robert Gaunky, a naval signalman recently discharged
2from the USS Anchorage; and
SJR66,2,53 Whereas, PFC Gaunky valued time with family and friends bicycling on the
4Elroy-Sparta and La Crosse River trails, as well as fishing for trout and bluegills in
5Stillwell Lake at Fort McCoy; and
SJR66,2,96 Whereas, PFC Gaunky was never one to allow obstacles to stand in his way of
7achieving goals, whether it was scaling the climbing wall in the field house at the
8University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at age 10 or tracking down a DVD box set of
9Monty Python, of which he was an avid fan, while stationed in Iraq; and
SJR66,2,1110 Whereas, PFC Gaunky continued his life of service to others even in death, by
11donating his heart to an 11-year-old girl in Germany; and
SJR66,2,1412 Whereas, Alex believed in the just cause of bringing liberty to the people of Iraq,
13through his enduring spirit in the hope that they would one day be able to embrace
14the freedom of the life that he so cherished; and
SJR66,2,1715 Whereas, he will forever be remembered as a true hero by those who knew him
16and for his patriotism, determination, selflessness, and love for his family and
17friends; now, therefore, be it
SJR66,2,21 18Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
19Wisconsin legislature, on behalf of a grateful state, honor Private First Class
20Anthony "Alex" Gaunky for his noble service to our country and extend their
21condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
SJR66,2,24 22Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
23resolution to Private First Class Gaunky's mother, Lori Friske; father, David
24Gaunky; and to his brothers, Adam Gaunky, Donleigh Gaunky, and Robert Gaunky.
