SR6,1,63 Whereas, the American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based
4voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health
5problem through prevention measures, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from
6cancer through research, education, advocacy, and service; and
SR6,1,97 Whereas, national Minority Cancer Awareness Week provides an opportunity
8to inform the minority community about the dangers of cancer and ways to prevent
9it; and
SR6,1,1110 Whereas, this year alone, approximately 1.37 million new cases of cancer will
11be diagnosed in the United States and 26,340 in Wisconsin alone; and
SR6,1,1412 Whereas, African-Americans have the highest death rate for cancer of any
13racial or ethnic group and cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death for Hispanic
14adults; and

1Whereas, the American Cancer Society offers help for all people facing cancer
2and strives to eliminate the unequal cancer burden that falls on minority and
3low-income communities; now, therefore, be it
SR6,2,5 4Resolved by the senate, That April 17-23, 2005, is proclaimed Minority
5Cancer Awareness Week in Wisconsin.
