AB257,1,2 1An Act to amend 985.04 of the statutes; relating to: requirements for selection
2as the official state newspaper.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Currently, the Joint Committee on Legislative Organization must recommend
to the legislature, in the form of a joint resolution, a Wisconsin newspaper to be the
official state newspaper. Upon passage of the joint resolution by both houses of the
legislature, the newspaper becomes the official state newspaper. This bill requires
the official state newspaper to be available for sale in printed form in every county
in the state.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB257, s. 1 3Section 1. 985.04 of the statutes is amended to read:
AB257,2,8 4985.04 Official state newspaper. The joint committee on legislative
5organization shall recommend to the legislature to designate some newspaper
6published in Wisconsin and available for sale in printed form in every county in the
7state
to be the official state newspaper, which shall publish all legal notices required

1to be published therein. Any such publication from any of the state agencies shall
2be deemed official. The joint committee may invite bids from all newspapers which
3meet the requirements of s. 985.03, but if it does so, it is not required to recommend
4the lowest bidder as the official state newspaper. The joint committee shall introduce
5its recommendation in the legislature in the form of a joint resolution. No
6designation takes effect until the joint resolution is adopted. A newspaper which is
7designated the official state newspaper shall continue as such until the legislature
8designates another newspaper to be the official state newspaper.
