AB492,1,3 1An Act to create 118.07 (4) of the statutes; relating to: providing information
2about the human papillomavirus to schools and to parents of pupils in grades
36 to 12.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
This bill directs the Department of Public Instruction (DPI), in conjunction with
the Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS), to collect information about
the human papillomavirus, including the causes and symptoms of the virus, how it
is spread, how it may be prevented, how to obtain additional information about the
virus, and the availability, effectiveness, and risks of vaccinations against the virus.
The information must include the recommendations regarding the vaccine and
prevention of the virus made by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices
of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The bill directs DPI to make the information available to school districts,
private schools, and charter schools, and requires each school board, private school,
and charter school, at the beginning of each school year, to provide the information
to the parents and guardians of pupils enrolled in grades 6 to 12 in the school district
or school.

enact as follows:

1Section 1. 118.07 (4) of the statutes is created to read:
AB492,2,92 118.07 (4) (a) In conjunction with the department of health and family services,
3the department shall collect information about the human papillomavirus, including
4the causes and symptoms of the virus, how it is spread, how it may be prevented, how
5to obtain additional information about the virus, and the availability, effectiveness,
6and risks of vaccinations against the virus. The information shall include the
7recommendations regarding the vaccine and prevention of the virus made by the
8Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control
9and Prevention.
AB492,2,1210 (b) The department shall make the information collected under par. (a)
11available to school districts, private schools, and charter schools. The department
12may do so by posting the information on its Internet site.
AB492,2,1813 (c) At the beginning of the 2008-09 school year, and annually thereafter, each
14school board and the governing body of each private school and each charter school
15shall provide the parents and guardians of pupils enrolled in grades 6 to 12 in the
16school district or school with the information made available under par. (b). The
17requirement may be satisfied by posting the information on the school district's,
18private school's, or charter school's Internet site.
