AJR11,1,1 Relating to: the life and public service of President Gerald R. Ford.

AJR11,1,4 Whereas, President Gerald R. Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1913, and he grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the midwestern values of honesty, integrity, and hard work were instilled; and

AJR11,1,8 Whereas, Gerald Ford starred on the University of Michigan football team, served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and returned to Grand Rapids, where he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for 25 years; and

AJR11,1,11 Whereas, Gerald Ford's road to the presidency was unprecedented: he was the first vice president chosen under the Twenty-fifth Amendment and on August 9, 1974, was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States of America; and

AJR11,1,13 Whereas, President Gerald Ford worked aggressively to heal a divided nation and reminded all Americans that the United States must move forward; and

AJR11,2,3 Whereas, President Gerald Ford acted to curb the trend toward government intervention and spending as a means of solving the problems of American society and the economy, fought to lower the devastating impact of inflation on American families, and fought to revive the national economy through controlled government spending; and

AJR11,2,9 Whereas, President Gerald Ford rose to meet the challenge of a changing international affairs by working to prevent a new war in the Middle East, providing aid to both Israel and Egypt while persuading the two countries to accept an interim truce agreement, continuing detente with the Soviet Union, and successfully working with Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev to set new limitations on nuclear weapons; now, therefore, be it

AJR11,2,11 Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature does hereby announce July 14, 2007, as "Gerald Ford Day."
