AJR11,1,42 Whereas, President Gerald R. Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1913, and
3he grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the midwestern values of honesty,
4integrity, and hard work were instilled; and
AJR11,1,85 Whereas, Gerald Ford starred on the University of Michigan football team,
6served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and
7returned to Grand Rapids, where he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives
8for 25 years; and
AJR11,1,119 Whereas, Gerald Ford's road to the presidency was unprecedented: he was the
10first vice president chosen under the Twenty-fifth Amendment and on August 9,
111974, was sworn in as the 38th President of the United States of America; and
AJR11,1,1312 Whereas, President Gerald Ford worked aggressively to heal a divided nation
13and reminded all Americans that the United States must move forward; and
AJR11,2,314 Whereas, President Gerald Ford acted to curb the trend toward government
15intervention and spending as a means of solving the problems of American society

1and the economy, fought to lower the devastating impact of inflation on American
2families, and fought to revive the national economy through controlled government
3spending; and
AJR11,2,94 Whereas, President Gerald Ford rose to meet the challenge of a changing
5international affairs by working to prevent a new war in the Middle East, providing
6aid to both Israel and Egypt while persuading the two countries to accept an interim
7truce agreement, continuing detente with the Soviet Union, and successfully
8working with Soviet leader Leonid I. Brezhnev to set new limitations on nuclear
9weapons; now, therefore, be it

11hereby announce July 14, 2007, as "Gerald Ford Day."
