Whereas, on December 8, 2007, Daniel O. Trainer, of Stevens Point, Wisconsin,
3passed away following a remarkable life dedicated to education and the preservation
4of Wisconsin's pristine natural resources; and

Whereas, Daniel bravely served his county in the United States Navy during
6World War II; and

Whereas, following his service in the United States military, Daniel received his
8Bachelor of Science degree from Ripon College in 1950, his Masters degree in
9microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1955, and his doctorate
10in veterinary science and microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
11in 1961; and

Whereas, Daniel served as a renowned scientist in the area of wildlife disease
13while on the Veterinary Science faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,
14creating the first graduate program in environmental diseases in the process; and

1Whereas, following his tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Daniel
2was chosen to serve as the Dean of the School of Natural Resources at the University
3of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, a post which he held for 17 years until his retirement
4in 1988; and

Whereas, during his tremendously successful tenure at the University of
6Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Daniel helped to build the largest undergraduate college
7of natural resources in the country, overseeing the education of over 5,000
8professionals now working in natural resource management; and

Whereas, following his career in academics, Daniel received a number of honors
10and accolades, including Ripon College's Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005,
11serving as a Department of Natural Resources Board Member and Vice Chair,
12induction into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame in 2006 (an organization
13which he helped to create), and most recently, Daniel was honored by the University
14of Wisconsin-Stevens Point through the dedication of the Daniel O. Trainer Natural
15Resources Building; and

Whereas, even in retirement, Daniel worked tirelessly on a number of
17environmental causes, including the River Alliance of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin
18Natural Resources Foundation (a foundation which he chaired), the Public
19Intervener Advisory Committee, Intra-State Recycling Corp., the Stevens Point
20Area Community Foundation, the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation, the Portage
21County Park Board, the Portage County Foundation, the Audubon Society, Ducks
22Unlimited, Kiwanis, the development of the 25 mile Green Circle Trail around the
23City of Stevens Point, and the Plover River Alliance; and

Whereas, Daniel Trainer was a beloved teacher and mentor, to hundreds of
25natural resource students and natural resource management professionals; and

2Daniel, and his three grandchildren, Eric, Margo, and Logan; now, therefore, be it

3Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature of
4the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of Daniel O. Trainer and
5extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.
