2independence.
SJR25,1,53 Whereas, on March 25, 1821, the Greek nation began its fight for independence
4and waged a successful War of Independence (1821-1829) and reinstituted a
5democratic form of government; and
SJR25,1,106 Whereas, it was Greece that first ignited the flame of freedom and is still known
7as the "cradle of democracy" by, during the sixth and fifth centuries B.C., in Athens,
8introducing to the world the idea of direct representative government, thus ushering
9in a golden age of art, architecture, philosophy, and drama under such giants of
10Western history as Pericles, Sophocles, Euripides, Socrates, and Plato; and
SJR25,1,1511 Whereas, a legacy of the Greek democratic ideal is the hope that it has always
12inspired in oppressed people throughout the history of the world, including the
13founding leaders of the United States of America who drew heavily on the democratic
14principles, political experience, and philosophy of ancient Greece in forming our
15representative form of government; and

1Whereas, of all of the wonderful gifts bestowed upon humanity by Greece — art,
2ethics, beauty, literature, philosophy, and democracy — we now celebrate the
3greatest of these, democracy. A world without political liberty and freedom of
4expression would be a world enshrouded in darkness, terror, and intellectual
5sterility. Greece has shown us the light, and we are eternally grateful; now,
6therefore, be it
SJR25,2,10 7Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the legislature of
8the state of Wisconsin celebrates March 25, 2007, as the 186th anniversary of Greek
9independence and reaffirms Wisconsin's abiding commitment to the magnificent
10principles of democracy; and, be it further
SJR25,2,13 11Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
12resolution to the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA),
13Chapter 369 of Madison and Chapter 40 of Milwaukee.
