SJR81,1,32 Whereas, Lee Sherman Dreyfus was born on June 20, 1926, in Milwaukee and
3died on January 2, 2008, at his home in Waukesha; and
SJR81,1,54 Whereas, Lee Sherman Dreyfus graduated from Washington High School in
5Milwaukee; and
SJR81,1,76 Whereas, Lee Sherman Dreyfus served in the United States Navy during World
7War II; and
SJR81,1,108 Whereas, Lee Sherman Dreyfus attended the University of
9Wisconsin-Madison, earning a bachelor's degree in 1949, a master's degree in 1952,
10and a doctorate in communication in 1957; and
SJR81,1,1411 Whereas, Lee Sherman Dreyfus served as the ninth president of Wisconsin
12State University-Stevens Point and was named the first chancellor of UW-Stevens
13Point following the Wisconsin State University and University of Wisconsin merger,
14becoming known as the "students' chancellor"; and

1Whereas, Lee Sherman Dreyfus spoke with a direct style and an uncommon
2personal nature and was rewarded with broad bipartisan support across Wisconsin;

SJR81,2,54 Whereas, wearing his signature red vest, Lee Sherman Dreyfus became
5Wisconsin's 40th governor in 1979; and
SJR81,2,86 Whereas, Lee Sherman Dreyfus continued to serve his state long after he left
7the governor's office as a member of the UW System Board of Regents and as interim
8superintendent of public instruction; now, therefore, be it
SJR81,2,12 9Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
10Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Lee Sherman
11Dreyfus contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his
12death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
SJR81,2,15 13Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
14resolution to Governor Dreyfus' wife, Joyce; his daughter, Susan Fosdick; and his
15son, Lee Sherman Dreyfus, Jr.
