SR22,1,42 Whereas, Representative Marcia P. Coggs served the city of Milwaukee and
3state of Wisconsin faithfully from 1976 until 1992 as a member of the assembly and
4was the first African-American woman elected to the legislature; and
SR22,1,75 Whereas, Representative Marcia P. Coggs, as a member of the Wisconsin State
6Assembly, was the first African-American to serve on the powerful Joint Committee
7on Finance; and
SR22,1,118 Whereas, Representative Marcia P. Coggs devoted her life to fighting for civil
9rights, fair housing, excellence in education, quality health care, and after retiring
10from the legislature continued fighting in her community with her motto of "helping
11the needy, and not the greedy"; and
SR22,2,212 Whereas, Representative Marcia P. Coggs helped to create a legacy of faith and
13political greatness through devotion to her church, Holy Redeemer Church of God in
14Christ, a legacy carried on in Wisconsin by her daughter, Supervisor Elizabeth

1Coggs-Jones, and in the state legislature by her nephews, Representative Leon
2Young and Senator Spencer Coggs; and
SR22,2,53 Whereas, the adoption of this senate resolution is supported not only by the
4senate, but also by members of the assembly, including specifically Representatives
5Soletski, Young, Grigsby, Turner, Zepnick, Sheridan, and Toles; now, therefore, be it
SR22,2,8 6Resolved by the senate, That the members of the Wisconsin senate honor the
7life and legacy of Representative Marcia P. Coggs for her dedication to improving the
8quality of life for all citizens in Milwaukee and the state of Wisconsin.
