2citizenship qualification for voting in elections in this state.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Currently, one of the qualifications prerequisite to voting in elections in this
state is U.S. citizenship. Currently, all individuals but certain military electors, as
defined by law, must register before voting. In order to register, an applicant must
affirm that he or she is a U.S. citizen. Violators are guilty of a Class I felony and are
subject to imprisonment for not more than three years and six months or a fine of not
more than $10,000 or both.
This bill directs the Government Accountability Board to prescribe, by rule,
procedures to ensure that the requirement for electors to be U.S. citizens is strictly
observed.
