AJR111,1,1 1Relating to: declaring May 29, 2010, as Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day.
AJR111,1,32 Whereas, Wisconsin boasts thousands of miles of streams and rivers and
3thousands of acres of lakes that are available to canoe enthusiasts; and
AJR111,1,74 Whereas, canoes were employed by the Native American inhabitants of
5Wisconsin and by the explorers and trappers that came after, including by Father
6Jacques Marquette and fur trader Louis Joliet, who crossed Wisconsin in the
7summer of 1673 in two canoes paddled by five coureurs de bois; and
AJR111,1,98 Whereas, Presidents Coolidge, Cleveland, Hoover, and Eisenhower fished
9Wisconsin's Brule River from canoes; and
AJR111,1,1210 Whereas, Wisconsin has a distinguished history in the industrial manufacture
11of canoes and a proud tradition of canoe restoration and canoe building by private
12craftsmen that has contributed to the evolution of traditional canoe design; and
AJR111,1,1513 Whereas, canoes continue to be employed by recreational boaters, hunters, and
14fishers to the present day, and canoeing provides a healthy recreational outlet for
15many Wisconsin residents and visitors; and

1Whereas, the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum will open in Spooner,
2Wisconsin, on May 29, 2010, to preserve the heritage of fine canoe craft; now,
3therefore, be it
AJR111,2,7 4Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
5Wisconsin legislature express appreciation for fine canoes and canoe builders past
6and present and declare May 29, 2010, to be Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Day; and, be
7it further
AJR111,2,9 8Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
9resolution to the Wisconsin Canoe Heritage Museum in Spooner, Wisconsin.
