AJR38,1,1 1Relating to: the life and military service of Sergeant Daniel James Thompson.
AJR38,1,52 Whereas, Sergeant Daniel James Thompson was born August 20, 1984, in
3Portage, Wisconsin, the son of Bob and Lisa Thompson, and died February 24, 2009,
4from an improvised explosive device while on active duty in the Kandahar province
5in southern Afghanistan; and
AJR38,1,86 Whereas, Daniel graduated from Portage High School in 2003 and joined the
7Wisconsin Army National Guard in his junior year to fight in service of his country;
8and
AJR38,1,119 Whereas, Daniel served with distinction during his time in the Wisconsin
10National Guard, U.S. Army Reserve, and while on active duty with the U.S. Army;
11and
AJR38,1,1412 Whereas, Daniel was a member of the Individual Ready Reserve and deployed
13to Afghanistan with the 715th Military Police Company based in Melbourne, Florida;
14and

1Whereas, Daniel attended MATC in Portage to earn his degree in criminal
2justice and law enforcement and hoped to enter the police force upon completion of
3his military service; and
AJR38,2,64 Whereas, Sergeant Thompson posthumously received the Combat Action
5Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Purple Heart, and the
6Bronze Star Medal in recognition of his heroism in service; and
AJR38,2,97 Whereas, Sergeant Thompson was known by family and friends as an honest
8and loyal person, and an ambitious and hard-working citizen, who touched the lives
9of many people in his community; and
AJR38,2,1110 Whereas, Daniel is survived by his parents, Lisa and Bob Thompson of Portage
11and his fiancée, Maria Steinke, whom he loved with all of his heart; and
AJR38,2,1312 Whereas, Daniel was laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Packwaukee,
13Wisconsin, on March 4, 2009; and
AJR38,2,1714 Whereas, Sergeant Thompson faithfully served the people and the state of
15Wisconsin and the United States of America and made the ultimate sacrifice for his
16country to protect our freedom and way of life, while advancing the blessings of
17liberty and democracy to the Afghani people; now, therefore, be it
AJR38,2,21 18Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
19Wisconsin state legislature hereby commend Daniel James Thompson for his
20exemplary life, express their sorrow at his death, and extend sincere condolences to
21his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further
AJR38,2,23 22Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution
23to Daniel's parents, Bob and Lisa Thompson, and to his fiancée, Maria Steinke.
